This is the case for a young lady from Kirigita, Naivasha, who has been unable to continue her studies because of the many odds stacked against her.

Everlyne Njeri was forced to abandon her educational path after performing relatively poorly in her high school examinations.

What grade did Njeri get in KCSE?

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Jane Wangui Murage said her 23-year-old daughter did not excel in her KCSE, which she sat for in 2022.

Zetech University student drops out, opens online shoe business to care for ailing mum: "It's heavy"

“She did her national examination when the academic calendar had been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. She got a D. She could not continue with her academics, frankly, because of financial challenges.
As a single mum, I carry the heavy burden of providing for my children. I have a sick daughter in Form Three and a son in Grade Six who both depend on me. My elder son stays with his grandfather—he cleared school a long time ago,” she narrated.

How much does Njeri charge for hair styling?

Njeri had gifted hands from a young age and used to style people's hair while still in primary school.

She never attended any beauty school or took any formal lessons. Her mother praised her, saying she was naturally talented.

“I couldn’t sit at home and do nothing, so I decided to put my talent to use. I now do people’s hair by appointment. Not because I’m a professional who needs bookings, but because clients are sporadic and not always available.

I go to clients’ homes and do their hair there. The price varies depending on the style. I can charge as little as KSh 50 for simple lines. My clients are also not financially stable, so I have to consider their pockets. Every extra coin I earn is a bonus,” Njeri said.

What does Murage do for a living?

Murage expressed appreciation for having such a hardworking daughter, adding that sometimes Njeri’s income helps settle a few household bills.

Murage, who owns a stall where she sells vegetables and tomatoes, said her daughter has not given up on her education.

“She works to save some money. She hopes to join a beauty college someday, so this is not the end for her,” she said.

Njeri echoed her mother’s sentiments, saying she is still hopeful about fulfilling her dreams despite the setbacks.

“I’m hoping that one day I will return to school. If there is any well-wisher willing to support me in joining college, I would greatly appreciate it. I want to help my family and make good use of my talent,” she said.
