The 36-year-old woman, Shamsia Seplisti, her seven-year-old son, Salimu Athimani, and four-year-old daughter, Hafaa Athimani, had been admitted to a hospital in Babati District after complaining of pain.

According to Mariam Kali, a relative, the three were diagnosed with liver problems, which were attributed to the consumption of poison.

She explained that Shamsia initially showed signs of recovery and was discharged from the hospital, but her condition worsened the following day, prompting her return to the medical facility.

The heartbroken Mariam noted that Shamsia was referred to the district hospital, where further tests revealed she was three months pregnant.

“Sadly, she lost the pregnancy, but after undergoing a procedure to cleanse her womb, she was given more drugs and discharged as she appeared to be recovering,” she said.

Mariam added that their conditions worsened while at home, and upon being rushed back to the hospital, Shamsia’s two children died one day apart.

Their mother passed away shortly afterwards.

The grieving woman remembered Shamsia as a kind and loving person who had no conflicts with those around her.

“As a fellow widow, we encouraged each other and worked hard for the sake of our children and a better life, but death took her,” said Mariam.

She appealed to the Tanzanian government to support the family in raising Shamsia’s two remaining children, who are still in school.

The village chairman, Deocrati Marani, said the villagers came together to help bury the two children and were preparing for the burial when news of their mother’s death arrived.

“We had to bury the children first, then their mother the following day. We still don’t know what caused their deaths. We don’t yet know what they ate that may have contained poison, as everything is still speculation,” he shared.

A report from security authorities and health experts on the exact cause of the deaths or poisoning had not yet been released at the time of reporting.
