Some have gone against their parents’ wishes, while others have tested their parents’ affection by threatening to disobey.
A young Gen Z received an unexpected response from her mother after telling her she would be going to the maandamano.
The two were chatting on the social media platform WhatsApp when TikTok user *melsha336*, also known as Muthoni, shared her plans.
“I told my mum I’m going to maandamano,” read the caption in the WhatsApp screenshot shared by Muthoni.
Muthoni's mum replies to daughter's plan for demos
The screenshot showed they were communicating via voice notes, and Muthoni had sent two before her mum finally responded.
She clearly wasn’t pleased with her daughter’s plan to join the protests and made her feelings known.
“Just write RIP. Now it’s obvious you want to kill me. Before you leave the house and go to your maandamano with your friends, just write RIP, okay? No problem,” she angrily said.
Muthoni's mum makes bold statement
The mum expressed that she could no longer stop her daughter from attending the protests and had metaphorically washed her hands of the matter.
Although she said she had accepted her daughter’s fate and wouldn’t stand in her way, her tone clearly showed she was hurt.
“Yes, I have agreed. Okay. You can go. You are now a good girl with an identification card. Okay, citizen? You can go. Fight for the country. Nonsense,” she added.
Muthoni's answer to mum's WhatsApp response
Muthoni could tell her mother was furious and deeply disappointed in her for ignoring her advice.
However, she quickly clarified that it was just a prank, sending several laughing emojis to lighten the situation.
“It was a prank,” she said, trying to defend herself after her mother’s not-so-affectionate response.
Netizens react to Muthoni's chats with mum
Social media users were amused by the interaction, with some laughing in the comment section.

Kenyan Gen Z leaks chats with his granny
In a similar story, another youth shared a screenshot of his conversation with his grandmother, who warned him against taking part in the protests.
TikTok user Timmy Odoyo posted the hilarious interaction between him and his granny, who showed deep concern for his safety.
The elderly woman urged her grandson not to attend the protests, saying she valued his life greatly.
However, she added that the family was prepared to bury him should he die for defying her warning.
Odoyo asked his grandmother never to use such harsh words again, as he felt hurt and devalued.
He noted that his granny had even asked his uncles and aunties to call and warn him about the dangers of joining the protests.
Despite the warnings, Odoyo did show up for the protests, but left after a few hours upon realising the situation was not peaceful.
