Nakuru: Mum of Form 4 Boy Killed During Protests Says He Was Heading Home for Midterm

Several families across various towns and counties in Kenya are mourning the loss of their loved ones killed during the June 25 Gen Z memorial protests.

One family in Molo, Nakuru county, tragically lost their 17-year-old son, Dennis Njuguna, after he was shot during the demonstrations.

What happened to Dennis Njuguna?

Njuguna, a Form Four student at Njenga Karume Secondary School in Molo town, was on a motorbike heading home for the mid-term holidays when tragedy struck.

The motorbike reportedly got involved in an accident during the protests, after which police officers allegedly opened fire, killing the young man on the spot.

His devastated mother, Jecinta Muthoni, tearfully spoke out, seeking justice for her beloved son.

Molo mum sends plea to President Ruto

She also sent a heartfelt appeal to President William Ruto, saying he has the power to stop police brutality.

“I want to plead with the president to talk to the police so they stop using live bullets on civilians. May God also open his eyes so he can see that it is wrong to kill our children,” she said.

Jecinta noted how painful it was for a parent to be forced to bury their child due to a premature and unjust death.

Lucy Wanjiku, one of Njuguna’s relatives, also condemned the killing, questioning why a police officer would aim at a child and shoot him.

The family of the 17-year-old has called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate the matter and ensure the officers responsible are held accountable.

Njuguna's death adds to the number of fatalities that have so far been recorded following the Gen Z memorial protests.

As of June 27, the death toll had risen to 15 people as families across the country search for their missing kin.

Signs to look out for in a parent needing psychological help

Loss can have a significant impact on both psychological and emotional aspects.

As such, TUKO.co.ke spoke to Jedida Wafula, a psychologist, who listed a few signs to look out for in a parent that may indicate they need counselling to deal with grief.

She shared that for parents like Jecinta Muthoni, the family can watch out for signs such as her being unable to carry out her daily activities as usual, withdrawing from social contact, and even displaying uncontrolled anger.

“Some people do not grieve openly, and so the emotions pile up and only show in different forms. This may not happen to everyone, but the signs mentioned may be a cry for help,” stated Jedida.

Nyeri dad speaks after son is killed by stray bullet

In other news, TUKO.co.ke reported that Kenneth Ouma, a young man from Karatina in Nyeri county, lost his life after being struck by a stray bullet while at the gym.

His father, Patrick Wafula, confirmed the incident, expressing his grief and the hopes he had for his son.

Patrick said Kenneth had recently completed school and secured a job barely two months ago, hoping to build a future for himself.

Kiambu man dies after being shot from his rooftop

TUKO.co.ke also reported that a tragic incident occurred in Juja, Kiambu county, when a man was shot while watching the June 25 protests from the rooftop of his house.

Ian Muhindi suffered a bullet wound to the head and was rushed to the hospital by a friend, despite the chaos in the area.
