What happened to Sotik woman who assaulted girl?
“The middle-aged woman who was seen in the viral video beating a young child has been arrested and is being held at Sotik Police Station. It is reported that she is the stepmother to the child. She is very inhuman 😭😭😭😭.
"The child should be taken to a care home if her real mother is no longer around, or the mother should also be arrested for child neglect if she is still alive," read a post by Bishop Rotich Kipkirui.
Despite the video evidence, the couple denied the charges in court. The Sotik Law Court stated it would make a determination on their bail application in two weeks.
Residents and activists in the area condemned the cruel act and called for justice for the little girl.
MCA Cheptoo condemns Sotik woman's action
The child was returned to the care of her grandmother following the heartbreaking incident.
“We were able to witness through the viral video how this woman mistreated the little girl. We strongly condemn that act and affirm that every child has the right to live in dignity,” said Roselyn Cheptoo, Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Rongena Manaret.
Certified Security Associate Kipkalya offered more insight into the matter, explaining that the assaulted child has an older sibling.
Both were born to one mother who reportedly left the marriage and remarried.
The father's decision to marry a second wife is what ultimately led to his current legal troubles.
Kenyans react after woman who assaulted child is arrested
Social media users flooded the comment section with emotional reactions to the incident that shocked many:
Pauline Muruli:
“Niliona hadi machosi yakanitoka. Asante sana kwa Wakenya waliofanya juhudi kushikwa kwa huyo mama. Na wanaume, ukiowa mama kambo, tafadhali hakikisha unajua vile watoto wako wanaishi. Don't trust a stranger.”
Cherop Ngeno:
“Ati the real mother should be arrested for neglect? It's the man who should be held accountable. What if the mother left the child with the father? He’s also a parent. Not all children stay with their mothers—fathers can raise them too.”
Kipkorir Ole Kirorei:
“What worries me is the other woman in the background doing her chores as if nothing is happening—and the cameraman is laughing.”

“Instead of taking the child to childcare, give her to me. I want to adopt.”
In an interview with TUKO.co.ke, Jane Murimi Mugo, a family expert advised spouses to consider their kids when chosing their partners.
"It is not easy to get a step parent who would love their step kids like their own. They need to understand the person they get in a relationship with. They need to be selfish, in the sense that they put their kids first.
Sometimes they have to sacrifice their feelings for the sake of their kids. That is why some parents choose to remain single, not necessarily because of age or fear of being hurt but because they have not found a suitable partner for their kids," she noted.
