Rigathi Gachagua Mourns Close Aunt in Touching Photos, Recalls Last Moments Before Her Death

Former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has been thrown into mourning following the demise of a close family member.

The politician took to social media to announce the heartbreaking news, noting that he had lost his aunt.

Gachagua penned a heartfelt message narrating the sequence of events that led to her unfortunate demise.

He expressed his unbearable pain, saying it was the first time since his mother’s death that he had felt that low.

When did Gachagua's aunt fall ill?

"I was called at 3am yesterday and informed that my only surviving aunt, Gladys Gathoni Kahua, had been taken ill, and I needed to see her urgently. I guided that she be taken to Jamii Hospital in Karatina town and planned to see her at 4pm that day.

"At 9am, I followed up with the hospital, and she was stable. I left for Karatina at 2pm, but unfortunately, I ran into a huge traffic jam near Ruiru and lost almost 30 minutes. I was called by the doctors and asked to hurry, as she had said her time on earth was running out," he said.

Gachagua did his best to reach the medical facility in time, as it seemed his aunt was in her final moments.

When did Gachagua's aunt die?

He eventually arrived, but it was too late — his aunt had already passed away.

"I struggled and arrived at the hospital at 4:10pm., only to be told I was five minutes late. My aunt left us at 4:05pm.
"Aunt Gathoni was my only surviving aunt on my mother's side, and since my mother’s demise, she had become my mother, mentor, cheerleader, and a prayer warrior so loving," he said painfully.

He recounted fond memories, including how he and others called her "tata wa matunda" (the fruit aunt) because of the yellow passion fruits she grew on her farm.

Gachagua recalls morning walks to his aunt

Gachagua said he used to take morning walks and pass by her house to enjoy a heavy and hot breakfast of porridge and boiled maize.

"We would laugh and laugh at her folktales, Mau Mau songs, and unending stories of the Mau Mau struggle and forest experiences, where she and my late mother took part in the cause while fighting the colonialists.
"She used to teach me the Meru language and always told me I was 'Kiana Kia Mwari' (son of a daughter) and that I needed to reconnect with our Meru family. We loved each other. We were close. She called me the apple of her eye and her favorite son. We spent quality time together, and her wise counsel still anchors me," he added.

Gachagua's words to aunt after her death

Gachagua said he has no one to turn to during this difficult moment, as he has lost both a mentor and a counsellor.

He consoled his aunt’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, and the people of Inono village, promising to give her a befitting send-off.

"You played a great role in my leadership and in my life.
"May the Almighty God rest your soul in eternal peace and may perpetual light shine upon you forever," he added.
