The boy, who studies in Kakamega county, is seeking funds to clear his school fees arrears before he can resume learning.

He is a bright student, having scored 403 marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), which secured him admission to a good high school.

“Today, he was supposed to go back to school, but he hasn’t, because he lacks KSh 14,000 for second term fees — and also has arrears amounting to KSh 49,000,” a Facebook post read.

How much is transport from Kiambu to Kakamega?

His mother, Lucy Mugure, who earns a living by washing clothes for people, says she does not have a single coin at the moment.

“This boy sometimes goes to school only if the teacher allows him in, while his mother tries to gather the money. But she often doesn’t even have KSh 1,500 for transport,” the post added.

A picture shared online showed the young man looking disheartened as he stood next to his mother.

Mugure in tears during interview

Mugure also appeared sorrowful, her son stuck at home due to their inability to settle the fee balance.

“He is capable of attaining a mean grade of A-. If you’re able to help, please support this student to continue his education. His mother’s number is 0716 515 324 (Lucy Mugure),” the post continued.

During an interview, Mugure could not hold back her tears as she spoke about the pain of seeing her son miss school.

Julia Murua, a mum of two from Nakuru told TUKO.co.ke the economy of Kenya had become difficult making it hard to afford essentials like school fees.

"Sometimes it is not even the school inflating or adding school fees but because of the tough economy we are in, it becomes difficult to pay school fees, while caring for other financial needs," she reckoned.

Social media users react to Stephen's story

The story touched many Kenyans online, with netizens expressing sympathy and hope for the struggling family.

Har Riet:

“May God open a way for me and Chege, so that we can get a good day school for our child without needing help from relatives. These boarding schools are stressful. If only we could avoid the burden of sending the child to Kakamega and all the shopping that comes with it, I would manage to pay fees for a day school. I’m just asking — if someone can help me get a good day school, I’ll handle the rest, and the child will still move forward.”
