Every year, Kenyans observe the Saba Saba celebration- historically a symbol of Kenya’s fight for democracy as well as civil rights.
In 2025, it took a dark turn, with footage and eyewitness accounts showing scenes of chaos and live gunfire. There were also masked operatives in unmarked vehicles allegedly targeting and shooting demonstrators.
According to lawyer Wahome Thuku, Gachara fell after he was shot in Likii Estate, and his friends rushed to his aid as fast as they could; they were sure that he had only sustained a leg injury, but it has now turned fatal.

Where is Bingwa Secondary School?
"It's reported that he has died. You see, from the many victims I have talked to, they never actually realised they had been shot until they saw blood flooding out of their bodies," Thuku said.
James was a Form Three student at Bingwa Secondary School in Laikipia East constituency and the only son in the family.
"May his family find peace of mind and encouragement at this painful moment. Go well son, the nation has let you down," he added.
How did Kenyans react to Gachara's death?
Lawrence Ngetich:
"Presidency can be recovered but injury or life lost cannot be recovered.Ten years or two terms or one term is not far.Let us not risk our lives that can't be recovered."

In another story, Kennedy Onyango’s mother, who was devastated after several bullets were allegedly sprayed on her son, claimed that President William Ruto never kept his promise to her.
On June 25, 2024, the death of the boy sparked outrage, and Ruto promised her many things, but until now, he has allegedly yet to fulfil any of them.
She decried the fact that all leaders had abandoned her, and no one had been there to hold her hand as things got worse for her.
