Kariuki died at the Kenyatta National Hospital after he was shot by a policeman who found him trying to sell masks along Moi Avenue in the Nairobi Central Business District during protests.

Good Samaritans came in droves and carried the young man to an ambulance, and he was admitted for treatment. He later died after being in the ICU for two weeks and despite the doctors' spirited efforts to save his life.

His mother was inconsolable at his requiem mass, appearing shattered, and she could not even stand to sing as the rest did during the mass.

What happened to Kariuki's mum?

As the family viewed Kariuki's body ahead of his burial, the heart-wrenching scene of his mother being overwhelmed unfolded in Iyego, Kangema, Murang'a county.

In a video shared by Chuma Moto TV, the middle-aged woman is heard screaming loudly before falling to the ground, where she continues screaming at the top of her lungs while flailing her hands and legs.

"Unable to bear the pain of losing her son, she collapsed as mourners wept around her. In the meantime, heavy police has been deployed in the area to heighten the security," said Chuma Moto on Facebook.

Boniface's mum says he wasn't supposed to attend demos

Another story revealed that the young, hardworking hawker had promised his mum that he was not going to attend the demonstrations.

Njeri emotionally recalled warning her son against joining the protests. She said he had reassured her he wouldn’t take part, only for that to be their final conversation.

Njeri was not the only one whose heart was broken, as the whole nation was shaken by the news; Kenyans wore masks to protest his death.
