Body of woman found dumped in Nzoia River

The deceased was allegedly brutally beaten by her husband, leading to her untimely and unfortunate death.

“She died because of domestic violence. Her husband works with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). I cooperated with the villagers, who were of great help. I appreciate them very much. They assisted me in carrying out a search to find out what had happened to our kin and where she was. The husband was nowhere to be seen throughout the search, he did not even participate. We even reached out to him during the postmortem, but he never showed up or showed any interest,” the deceased’s relative claimed.

GBV and femicide cases in Kenya

The Kenya National Human Rights Commission reported receiving and processing approximately 207 cases of gender-based violence between the years 2017 and 2024, excluding the cases documented in the electoral years of 2017 and 2022.

"The Commission has received the highest number of complaints in Nairobi and Kisumu counties, and the lowest number of complaints from Marsabit county," the report stated in part.

The KNHCR noted that at least 57.4% of the complainants were female and 40.7% were male, with the youth (18-34 years) being the most affected age group.

"The Commission has observed that there is a surge in reported cases of (S)GBV during the general elections and in instances of political unrest. This is indicative of the use of sexual violence as a weapon of conflict," the report stated in part.
