A bright and promising young man has found himself on the streets of Kahawa Wendani after his educational journey took a wrong turn.

Alvin Mwangi Wanjiku says he is now homeless after facing several challenges, some of them caused by his own mistakes.
He is a fifth-year student at Kenyatta University, pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) degree, with just a year left to complete his course.

Speaking to Derrick Mbugua, the young man narrated how he ended up on the streets despite initially being given a place to stay.

"It reached a point where I was almost being kicked out of the hostel, so I tried to buy time. I sold my phone, but even that was not enough to sustain me for long. The well-wisher who had bought me the phone and who was paying my rent stopped supporting me because of my behavior. I was abusing substances," he said.
Mwangi had been working at a car wash and also as a bartender, the latter being where he fell into substance abuse.
However, after learning his lesson, he says he stopped using substances and is now ready to return to school.
Where are Alvin Mwangi's parents?
"He lost his mother during the COVID-19 pandemic, and he says he has never set eyes on his father. Mwangi completed his primary education in 2010 at Precious Gift Academy and scored an A. Through sponsorship, he completed his secondary education at Murang’a High School in 2014, scoring a mean grade of A (84 points).

"In 2015, Mwangi joined Kenyatta University to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) degree. The young man has been doing all kinds of jobs to sustain himself throughout his studies," Mbugua narrated.
Mwangi has been sleeping in vibandas and lecture halls after being unable to afford rent.
He has appealed to well-wishers to help him with accommodation so that he can comfortably complete his final year of study.

KU aerospace engineering student turns to cooking maandazis
