What is chronic kidney disease?

According to the Mayo Clinic, chronic kidney disease, also known as chronic kidney failure, is a gradual loss of important kidney function.

Basically, the work of the kidney is to filter wastes as well as excess fluids from the blood, which the body then removes as urine.

In cases of advanced chronic kidney disease, a patient will experience dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, as well as a buildup in the body.

In the early stages of the condition, a patient may experience a few signs or symptoms. They may not realise that they have kidney disease until the condition has advanced over time.

What are the symptoms of kidney disease?

Depending on the severity of the condition, chronic kidney disease can cause nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and weakness or fatigue.

In some cases, people experience sleeping problems, urinating more or less, muscle cramps, and decreased mental sharpness

"This condition has slowly taken away my health, strength and independence. Living with kidney disease has not only been physically exhausting but also emotionally and financially overwhelming," she said.
"My kidneys are no longer functioning well enough to sustain my body, I now depend on regular dialysis treatment to survive," she added.

According to Wafula, doctors informed her that the best chance at living a full life again is through a kidney transplant.

This journey, however, has significant medical expenses, including the cost of treatments, medication, travel, tests, and hospital stays.

"There is also the cost of post-transplant care," she said.
"The financial burden is far beyond what I can carry. That's why I'm humbly asking for your support. The contribution channel is via my phone numbers:0714010286/0794972563. May God bless everyone who will contribute,"she added.

Family appeals to KSh 2.8million

In other news, a family in distress appealed for KSh 2.8 million to fund a kidney transplant procedure for their 12-year-old daughter, Shanice Wambui, who was ailing.

Shanice was sadly diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in August 2024. When she was taken to the hospital, doctors say a transplant would help her.

Well-wishers were asked to contribute to Shanice’s treatment, and a Paybill number was provided for them.
