While sharing their story of struggle and resilience, Rebecca said that Chloe, who is seven years old, was diagnosed with sickle cell disease when she was only nine months old.

How did Talia, Rebecca's lives change?

"It affected the right side of her brain, impairing her mobility—especially her left leg. She could no longer run or play like other children her age. Since then, she’s been under consistent treatment at Ruaraka Uhai Neema Hospital, under the care of Dr. Maria, who has walked with us for the past three years," she said.

"Since then, our lives have never been the same. We've lived in and out of hospitals—month after month—for checkups, admissions, and treatments where I spend KSh 13,000 for daily drugs and transfusions monthly," she said.

The Grade One people at Red Apple Junior Academy in Ruaka, Kiambu county recalled that in August 2022, their world was shaken when Talia suffered a blood clot that led to a stroke.

"As a mother, I’ve watched my daughter endure more pain than many adults ever will. Talia’s father has never been present in her life—not since conception. He does not support her education, medication, or hospital bills. I’ve been doing this alone, by God’s grace," she added.

Why did Rebecca moved from Kisumu to Nairobi?

Rebecca moved to Nairobi from Kisumu when she got a job to support her treatment, but in 2023, her contract ended, and she has been unemployed ever since.

"With no stable income, and having lost both my parents, I’ve had to lean on my siblings. They’re loving and supportive, but they only earn enough to take care of their own families. Life has been a constant struggle," she said.
"Today, Talia is fighting for her life in the ICU at Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital, where she was rushed after developing another clot. The doctors acted fast—she’s undergone a blood exchange and is under close monitoring. But the hospital bill has ballooned to KSh 2 million , and it continues to rise," she added.

How can Rebecca and Talia be helped?

Rebecca says she can't carry this burden alone; her child needs to recover, but more urgently, she needs to be discharged when she stabilises.

"That’s why I am sharing this story, not just as a mother crying out for help, but also as a woman who believes in the power of the Kenyan spirit," she said.
"Please, help me give Talia a chance to go home. A chance to keep fighting. A chance to live. Any form of support, whether financial, prayers, or simply sharing our story will be deeply appreciated," she added.
