This morning, July 27, villagers awoke to shocking news that the body of the boy’s great uncle, a brother to the deceased boy’s grandfather, was discovered near a riverbank, his legs still submerged in the water.

Why was teen's grandpa arrested?

Radio presenter Herman G. Kamariki told TUKO.co.ke that the elderly man had been arrested following the boy’s death.

"He was arrested because the sand harvesting that led to the fatal accident occurred on land reportedly linked to him," he explained.

His homestead had been designated a crime scene. Though he was later released after police processing, his death raises more questions than answers.

Villagers and the area assistant chief confirmed that he had been seen walking home after his release. Less than 24 hours later, he was found dead.

"It looks like the man was killed elsewhere, and then his body was dumped near his home," he shared.

How did Vihiga teen die?

The Grade Nine pupil had died tragically after being buried alive by a collapsing heap of sand while trying to help his family earn a living.

His father, a single parent and currently unemployed, had been depending on the boy’s help to make ends meet.

“This was not just a boy,” one elder in the village said. “He was the hope of the household. And now, with nothing, the family is staring at another funeral.”

Vihiga community left with question marks

Police have launched investigations to determine the actual cause of the elderly man’s death.

Whether it was natural, accidental, or connected in any way to the sand harvesting incident remains unclear.

The community is left with more questions than answers, and a haunting silence hangs over the homestead where tragedy has struck twice in quick succession.

Since the tragic news broke, Kamariki has been leading a fundraiser to help the family give the two relatives a decent sendoff.
