“I’ve decided to leave and go elsewhere because I feel like a bad child,” the letter begins.

He openly admits to having not always behaved well but expresses a deep desire to reform—albeit from a distance.

“I will return when I feel I’ve reformed, so don’t look for me because I will be fine.”

Tony opens up about betrayal

What pierced the hearts of many was Tony’s confession that he had reached his breaking point after being falsely accused of stealing a phone.

“She coerced me into admitting I stole it so you would punish me,” he wrote, presumably referring to a relative or sibling named Noel.

The betrayal, compounded by what he saw as his mother’s refusal to believe in his innocence or his sickness, was too much for the young boy to bear.

“I’ve also carried my medicine,” he added, “because when I told you I was unwell, you doubted me.”

Speaking exclusively to TUKO.co.ke, child psychologist Sheila Mwangi stressed the importance of re-establishing trust after a child runs away due to emotional distress. She noted that many children act out or flee not because they are defiant, but because they feel invisible in their own homes.

“When a child runs away, it's not always an act of rebellion, it is often a desperate cry to be seen, heard, and taken seriously. The parent’s first role is to create a safe emotional space. When the child returns, approach them not with lectures or punishments, but with a willingness to listen, repair, and rebuild,” she told TUKO.co.ke.

Kenyans sympathise with Tony

The TikTok video showing the letter has since gone viral, racking up thousands of views and emotional reactions from users, many of whom saw their childhood pains reflected in Tony’s words.

Maaragoli Finest commented:

“I felt emotional wakati alisema mamake haamini ni mgonjwa… halafu kuekelewa ameiba simu. Let’s learn to listen to both sides as parents.”

Ma❤️nuel❤️Joy❤️ echoed the sentiment:

“So emotional, but hope God will show and help parents on the right way to raise their children.”

Others, like Harriet 194, offered heartfelt prayers:

“Imagine nimejipata nikilia aki Mungu amlinde. Mungu atulindie watoto wetu wenye tuko mbali.”

Another user, it's Mercy, shared a sobering truth:

“Sometimes our parents think that providing physically is enough, but emotionally we are orphans.”
“Oooh my, it's so painful to read such a thing,” wrote Fay. “You have made me shed tears, but it shall be well for the little one.”

The emotional outpouring online has prompted many parents to reflect on their communication with their children, especially when it comes to trust, emotional support, and discipline.

As for Tony, his whereabouts remain unknown.

But one thing is certain: his letter, raw and brave, has struck a chord far beyond his home, reminding the world that children, too, carry burdens, and sometimes, they cry for help in silence.

What to do when child runs away

According to information shared by Empoweringparents.com, the first step that a parent should take if their child runs away is to report to the police.

This helps the authorities' search operations begin immediately. Call close friends and family in case your child has visited them.

While the safety of the child is crucial at such a time, it is important not to beg the child to come home or apologise if they are found.

This is dependent, however, on what caused them to run away. If they ran away so that they could avoid responsibility, do not apologise, as this will teach them that they can run away when they do not want to be held accountable.

When they return home, have a candid conversation with them and remind them you are still the parent.
