She greeted and told him to go lock the door, after which she got into a taxi and left for work, unaware of what lay ahead.
About 20 minutes later, she received a message from her mother, warning her there had been shootings in the area.
"She just wanted to check where I was. I told her I was on my way to work. She said, 'Okay, good.'"
Frantic call that changed Shazzy's life
Shazzy was working alone that day in a hospital cafeteria. The eerie sense of unease that followed her to work wouldn't let go.
"I couldn’t concentrate. Something just didn’t feel right. Then suddenly, I heard screaming and crying from one of the security guards. Her brother had passed on. That sadness just hit me harder."
Trying to keep herself together, she pushed through her duties until the phone rang and her hubby told her that their son had been shot.
Everything around her collapsed. Shazzy screamed and cried. She called her supervisor, who rushed to get her a ride home.

How Shazzy knew son was dead
Calls to her mother, sister, and brother went unanswered. Then, a WhatsApp voice note from her nephew arrived.
"‘Aunty, they shot him,’" she recalls, her voice cracking. "I didn’t want to ask how he was. I was too scared of the answer."
A childhood friend called, offering to fetch her. Desperate for hope, Shazzy asked how her son was doing.
The friend assured her that he was okay, offering her a tiny sliver of hope that kept her going.
But as the car approached her home, she saw something she couldn’t unsee: a crowd, police tape, and silence that screamed the truth.
"I didn’t even see his body at first," she said. "I just saw the yellow tape. I needed to get out of the car, but the driver held me back until he stopped. My legs couldn’t carry me. My mother met me in the field and started praying over me."
