The student, identified as Joshua Peter Mburu, was part of a group of learners on an academic excursion to Mombasa and Malindi during the August school recess.

Philanthropist Ndungu Nyoro told TUKO.co.ke that there was tension when the news was shared through the school's official WhatsApp group on the evening of August 5.

In the message, it was revealed that the tragedy occurred during a visit to a beach in Malindi after the students had toured several historical and tourist sites, including Fort Jesus, Likoni Ferry, and the Vasco da Gama Pillar.

The communication, which initially began with a note of gratitude to parents and God for the trip's success, took a sombre turn as the school confirmed the heartbreaking news.

“Unfortunately, one of our learners, while at the beach, drowned and the good God took his life away,” the message read. “That is why we have been silent in the group, trying to find him with the help of the police and concerned authorities.”

The news sent shockwaves across the community, with parents expressing devastation and outrage over the incident.

A parent told TUKO.co.ke that the students were swimming when a heavy tide hit the ocean and covered them.

"The tides hit when the little boy was inside, after which he disappeared. By the time they found him, it was too late," said the parent.

They also expressed disappointment with the school's communication delays and apparent lack of sufficient supervision during the beach outing.

Joshua Peter Mburu's death under investigation

Authorities in Malindi are reportedly working with the school and family to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, grief counsellors have been dispatched to the school to support students and teachers as the community comes to terms with the loss.

Joshua Peter Mburu is remembered as a bright and promising young learner whose life was cut short too soon.

2 killed, 11 injured in bus trip crash

The incident comes four days after two schoolchildren passed away following a nasty road accident along the Mubende-Kampala Road.

Eleven others sustained injuries in the accident and were rushed to the hospital where they are still receiving tratment.
