The family of Squadron Leader Peter Anala, the pilot who perished in a recent helicopter crash, is reeling from an unthinkable tragedy: the loss of three siblings in just five months.

Squadron Leader Anala, 35, was among the eight victims of the fatal crash, which also claimed the lives of two ministers of state, three government officials, and three soldiers.

Records indicate that the group was travelling for an official engagement when their Z-9 helicopter went down.

According to Thomas Adabogo, the first blow came on March 31, when the eldest sibling, Grace Lena Anala, died in Virginia, USA.

She was known in her family as the nurturing “big sister,” the one who checked in on everyone, no matter how far apart life had taken them.

Her funeral was held on June 2 in Virginia. In a bittersweet twist, the man who led her burial service was her own younger brother, Rev. Fr. Anthony Anala SVD, a Catholic priest serving in Mississippi.

In a cruel twist of fate, Father Anthony passed away on June 20, just days after officiating his sister’s funeral. He was buried on June 24.

Barely six weeks later, on August 6, tragedy struck again when Squadron Leader Anala, the youngest in the family, was killed in the helicopter crash.

Born on November 2, 1989, in the small town of Siniesi, Peter’s life had been one of service and discipline.

The youngest of the late Paul Oscar Anala and Madam Lucy Apung Anala, he attended St James Seminary Secondary School in Sunyani before pursuing higher education at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

On June 20, 2013, he enlisted in the military academy and was commissioned into the Aircrew Branch on October 17 that year, just four months after joining.

At the time of his death, he was serving at the No 8 Helicopter Wing in Takoradi.

Peter Anala eulogised as dedicated pilot

Anala was on the controls of the ill-fated Z-9 helicopter when it tumbled down from the skies. Friends remember him as soft-spoken but fiercely dedicated.

Colleagues say his professionalism in the cockpit was matched only by his humility on the ground.

He leaves behind a wife and a young child; a family now facing the same crushing loss that has defined this year for the Analas.
