Despite health challenges, Felix enrolled to a master’s program in January 2024 and sat for his exams while unwell.

In April, his condition worsened, and he was diagnosed at AGC Tenwek Hospital with End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD), beginning immediate dialysis.

Later, doctors at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital advised that he undergo a kidney transplant.

Felix Otieno underwent 4 surgeries

However, the process was delayed after he was diagnosed with a bacterial infection, collapsed heart valves, and a hole in the heart.

In July 2025, Felix was admitted to Tenwek Cardiothoracic Centre, where he underwent four surgeries.

The first repaired the valves and heart defect, the second stopped internal bleeding, and the third removed a blood clot.

While he showed signs of recovery, Felix developed heart complications and another blood clot that night and was returned to the theatre for the fourth time.

Sadly, he didn't make it out successfully this time around and passed away at dawn on August 9.

Mother seeks help as 5-month-old baby develops swelling

In another case, the family of Baby Maryann Mbithe is appealing for help to raise KSh 400,000 for her treatment.

Maryann was born healthy, but at just two months old, her tiny face began to swell from a rare condition called infantile hemangioma.

The now-five-month-old baby has been undergoing chemotherapy every three weeks, and her hospital bill has soared beyond what her mother can afford.

What's worse, SHA only covers the bed charges, leaving her mother, Mama Ryan, to shoulder the rest of the bill.
