Narok: Former School Dropout Thanks Teacher Whose Help Turned Him into University Graduate

  • In 2015, Steven Olieba Otanga was a lost young man, roaming around Esibuye Market after failing his KCSE
  • Then, one caring teacher, Mwalimu Pickford Enane, stopped him and offered a second chance at education; no fees, just belief
  • Today, Steven is a university graduate and a Project Officer transforming lives in maternal and neonatal health

In 2015, Steven Olieba Otanga’s dreams seemed to crumble before his eyes. Having lost both parents, the once-brilliant student’s grades had plummeted, and when the KCSE results came out, he failed to qualify for university.

With no clear path ahead, he spent his days wandering aimlessly around Esibuye Market, unsure where life was leading him.

Which teacher helped Steven Olieba?

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, he shared that it was during one of those aimless days that fate, in the form of a caring teacher, intervened.

The destiny connector was his former teacher, Mwalimu Pickford Enane, who pulled him aside and offered him a fresh chance at school.

"Olieba, you were a brainy student; you deserved a better grade,” Mwalimu Pickford shared, insisting that he return to school.

He promised to speak to the principal and arrange his comeback, which saw him re-enrolled at Mwituha Secondary School.

The teacher also ensured that he studied for free, and that year, earned a direct entry to the Technical University of Mombasa to pursue Community Health Nursing.

On July 14, 2022, Steven graduated, a moment he says would never have happened without the teacher who believed in him when he had lost all hope.

Today, he works as a Project Officer with Child.org in Narok, focusing on maternal and neonatal health.

“I have no better way to thank him,” Steven says, “but I will pay him a visit and let him know he saved my future.”

In another heartwarming story, Teacher Dominic Orina has been working towards assisting a young man to raise school fees to join Meru University.

Orina explained that he taught the student from Grade Four to Grade Eight, adding that the lad's performance was always impressive.
