“I had a girlfriend. We were having issues from time to time. When she got pregnant, she told me that she would give birth and leave me with the kids. I thought she meant I would have the responsibility to care for the kids, like being a present support system. I said, ‘Fine,’ not knowing what she truly meant.

She used to go for the checkups alone. I was always working, hustling as a boda boda rider. When she told me she was having twins, I never believed it. I thought she was bluffing because I did not go with her for the checkups. Little did I know, she was telling the truth,” he narrated.

Nyagaka's girlfriend gave birth and welcomed twins, to the surprise of both of them, as she had been hoping for only one child.

How Nyagaka found his twins abandoned in his house

The couple were not living together, as she was the one staying with the newborns at her place.

“When they were two weeks old, I left my house to go to work. I normally do not close my door because we have CCTV cameras and the place is secure. When I returned, I found the twins, a boy and a girl, lying in bed alone. That was how and when I started my single-parenting journey. I never reached out to my girlfriend. I assumed the role of a single parent immediately.

I am a firstborn, and I have three siblings whom I took in and still care for after our parents died. My father passed away first, then my mum passed in 2021. I have taken them to school and provided for them, so this was not new to me,” he said.

Nyagaka, a boda boda rider, shared that it is not a walk in the park caring for two newborns, as it is a huge responsibility on his shoulders.

Nyagaka's advice to young men

Other than his boda hustle, he sells baby clothes to supplement his income and ensure the little ones have diapers, food, clothes, and shelter.

“When I wake up, I do some cleaning, prepare food, and feed them before I leave for the hustle. I do not spend a lot of time outside, as I return home every two hours at most. It is not easy, and there is no time to relax or get comfortable. I am always on the move.

I have no choice but to be responsible. I would urge every young man out there to be responsible and be in control of their decisions. Do not get anyone pregnant if you are not ready to take on the responsibility of being a father, even a single dad,” he said.

As a boda rider, he said he does not earn much, but he has to adjust his budget to meet the different needs for himself and the kids.
