Esther, who lives with her three-year-old son in a mabati house, narrated the challenges she faces raising him alone.

When did Esther get pregnant?

With the tough economic situation, she cannot afford to take her child to daycare, so she leaves him at home while she goes out to hustle.

She collects and sells plastic bottles and cartons to earn income to care for herself and her son.

"This is Esther’s story: three years ago, she got pregnant. The baby’s father asked her to terminate the pregnancy, but she refused, and he abandoned her.

When she was seven months pregnant, she started collecting plastics and cartons to make a living. She stopped briefly after giving birth, then resumed when the baby was four months old. For the last three years, that has been her hustle," Timothy Wanjau shared.

How much does Esther make per day?

When she wakes up, she prepares tea and bread so that when her child wakes up, he has something to eat and can stay calm in the house until she returns.

"On a good day, Esther makes KSh 100 to KSh 200 from selling plastics. She then goes home with whatever she has earned, that is her life," Timothy Wanjau shared.

Esther admitted she is often forced to lock her son in the house whenever she goes out to work.

How does Esther leave her son?

However, she never leaves him without food.

"Before I leave, I ensure I have prepared some tea for him and leave him with bread," she said after reuniting with her excited son back home.
