In the video, the boy, who is about three years old, is seen holding a jembe, and his grandfather holds him down, showing him how to do it.
The sibling of the boy and other mourners hover around him and watch as he undertakes the draining and sad task that is very difficult even for grown-ups.
Benjamin Ratemo, who is familiar with the culture, shed some light about it and said that most people do not understand that it's only the firstborn who can undertake the job.

Who digs a grave in Kisii culture?
"The young boy is the firstborn of the departed woman; she came with the other kids. In our culture, the firstborn son has to undertake the task," said Ratemo.
"The child is not expected to dig the whole grave, he is just required to make a small mark, and then the digging starts," he added.
On his part, Eram Shanies insisted that the task is only undertaken by male children and in some cases, a female child may be the firstborn, but only the male child will do it.

Mourners force widow to throw soil

In another story that sheds light on the culture of the Kisii, a dramatic scene unfolded during the funeral of a businessman in Kisii county, where the widow refused to throw soil in the grave.
As soon as she refused, things went south for the widow, as she was harassed; her people were beaten and chased from the gravesite.
In a viral video, the mother of two, identified as Mellen, is seen on the ground beside the grave, surrounded by a group of men who forcefully ask her to perform the ritual and drag her as she seemingly resists.
