Rehema Seremani explained the circumstances leading to her husband’s disappearance, noting the emotional turmoil it had left her in.
Who called Joseph Lema?
She said that Lema left home to meet a man who had called him using an unfamiliar phone number, promising him a construction job.
The 28-year-old, who worked as a construction worker in Ng’ambo ward, Moshi, Tanzania, left their house excited for the opportunity on July 22 at around 4pm and never returned.

“We were together at home when he received the call; in fact, he was helping me with the firewood. The caller asked if he did construction work, and when he confirmed, he asked him to meet at Msaranga Secondary School immediately. He left, promising to return,” Rehema recalled.
Rehema added that she called her husband at around 7pm the same day, but he did not respond. She assumed he was probably caught up with work and would return home late.
However, she became worried when it was 10pm and he had not come home.
The following morning, she rushed to her mother-in-law’s house to check if Lema had spent the night there, but he had not.

Was Lemaa abducted?
“I searched for him at his friends’ houses because his phone had been switched off, but no one had seen him. I even went to the school where he had been asked to meet the caller, but the teachers told me they had no ongoing construction and had not seen Lema,” she narrated.
A young man who had seen Lema that evening claimed he saw him with three other men, who led him into a car while another pushed his bicycle and parked it against a wall before they all drove away.
The headteacher advised her to report the matter to the police station, which she did, but officers have yet to trace her husband’s whereabouts.
Rehema tearfully said her husband was not just missing but had been abducted.
“I do not know if my husband is alive or not. He is our family’s sole breadwinner because I do not have a job. As we speak, our firstborn is out of school due to fees. I want my husband back,” she said.
She further appealed to those holding Lema to release him, apologising for any mistake he may have committed.
Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander, Simon Maigwa, confirmed that an initial report of the incident had been received, but so far, no further information about the man has emerged.
