Speaking to NTV, Magdalene recalled the last time she saw her son alive. It was a quiet afternoon in Zimmerman, where the family lives.
Elijah, a Form Three student home for the holidays, left to take some clothes to a tailor. He never returned.
“When evening came and he wasn’t home, we started looking for him,” says Claire Ngina, Elijah’s elder sister. Their search led to devastating news; Elijah was in the hospital with head injuries.
Ngina disclosed that she spoke to her brother briefly, where he told her that he had a head injury but promised to explain everything once he left the hospital.
That never happened as days later, Elijah was gone.
The pain is unbearable for Magdalene, a single mother who worked odd jobs to keep her son in school. Elijah wasn’t just her child; he was her hope, her protector, and her future.
“I had placed all my hopes in that boy because sons are usually protective of their mothers,” she says softly, clutching a rosary in one hand and a Bible in the other; her only sources of strength.

What makes the loss even harder to bear is the mystery surrounding Elijah’s death. An autopsy was performed without the family’s presence.
The report cited blunt force trauma as the cause of death, but strangely, made no mention of the gunshot wound the family was told about.
This omission has left them with more questions than answers. The night after Elijah’s burial, Magdalene says her son appeared to her in a dream.
“He smiled at me before disappearing,” she whispers, eyes glistening. “Maybe he was telling me he is at peace… but I still want to know what happened to him.”
For Claire, the grief is overwhelming, and she admits that she may never recover from her brother's loss.
Elijah’s life was cut short before it truly began, a young soul with dreams that will never be realised.
For now, his mother continues to pray, seeking solace in faith while clinging to the memory of her son’s smile in that dream.
Statistics of deaths from Gen Z protests
Statistics from the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) indicate that over 65 people died during the protests.
The data also shows that 342 civilians sustained gunshot wounds while 171 police officers were injured, figures that many have disputed.
Concerns were also raised over the fact that police officers shot and killed minors who were not part of the demonstrations.
