His 17-year-old son, Ian Opango, was shot dead during the anti-government protests in Nairobi, a day that forever changed Jackson’s life.

Ian’s last words to his family were ordinary. He left home after his aunt asked him to buy diapers. Hours later, the family realised something was wrong.

Jackson told NTV that when the youngster had not returned by 5 pm, they started looking everywhere.

Then came the moment no parent ever wants to experience: a video circulating online showing a young boy shot dead and taken to a mortuary. The boy looked like Ian.

Desperate for answers, Jackson rushed to the Rongai Police Station, only to be met with hostility.

He disclosed that the police officers kept telling him to file a missing person’s report, but something inside told him his son was gone.

What he didn’t know was even more heartbreaking.

“All the time I was asking about my son, they had his body in one of the rooms at the back,” Jackson says, tears welling in his eyes.

It took a trip to City Mortuary hours later for the truth to come crashing down as the mortician confirmed that Ian was, indeed, dead.

The young student's body had been brought in at 10 pm, which meant that the officers had kept it at the station for hours.

The pain rippled through the family. Ian’s grandfather, who lived in Mumias, collapsed and died upon receiving the news of his grandson’s death. Two lives gone in a single day.

Today, Jackson is a shadow of his former self. The man who once worked tirelessly in Nairobi to provide for his family cannot summon the strength to return.

“I lost the psych for everything,” he admits softly. “Nothing makes sense anymore.”

At the small grave in Mumias East, flowers lie in the red soil as a silent testimony to a future stolen too soon.

For Jackson, the disbelief lingers over how a simple errand ended with his son lying in a cold mortuary, nameless and alone.

Deceased Machakos boy appears in mother's dream

In another part of the country on the same day, 17-year-old Elijah Muthoka had been struck by anti-riot police officers.

Not long after he was buried, the teenager appeared to his mother, Magdalene Mwongeli, in a dream at night, a moment she vividly remembers.

The grieving single mother of two broke down while narrating the last moments she saw her son alive.
