Doreen's husband left while she was jobless and vulnerable, as she was pregnant with their fifth child and had not worked for long, as she was a stay-at-home mum and wife.
Speaking on Romantic Mukiga YouTube channel, the mum of five described the events that led up to the crumbling of her marriage, recounting the emotional abuse she went through before he left her.
"You can have a partner who does not abuse you physically but who batters you emotionally. This man battered me emotionally with words like 'you are stupid', I thought you had a brain, but you don't'. He would put me down. When I tried to go back to school, he discouraged me and said I did not have the brains to do that," she recalled.

But the words that cut her deep were when he said he did her a favour by getting married to her.

The mum of five narrated that her husband ostensibly premeditated his exit from the marriage since he even told her what name she should give their unborn child.
Doreen's journey into single motherhood
After her husband left her, Doreen and her children, including a newborn, slipped into abject poverty.
She narrated going for days without food and resorting to begging.
"It is easy for someone to love you with one child, but with five, not easy. I was rejected everywhere," she said amid tears.

They survived on leftovers from the market, and slept on verandas, because she did not have a job as her husband had forbidden her from working.
Doreen narrated that she did not hear from her husband until 12 years later.
"One time, I bought my kids some gifts and lied that they were from their father. I tried to call him to ask him to have a relationship with his children and to help me raise them, but he declined, saying not everyone must grow up with a father," she recalled.
Despite the struggles, the mum managed to forgive the man after attending a church service in which she was given a word of healing.
"Though I forgave, sometimes I get triggered when I remember something he did," she said saying her firstborn is now 20 years old.
