Janet Shitandi revealed that she first got married after running away from home due to mistreatment by her stepmother.
Fortunately, the man she met was kind and supportive that he even took her back to school, sponsoring her education through high school and college.
“He was very nice and kind. He encouraged me to study hard and would even revise with me so I could catch up with my peers,” she said.
Janet shared that their union was blessed with two children. However, her husband sadly passed away before she gave birth to their second child.

“I was heartbroken. Life was better with him around, but God took him away. I had to find a hustle to feed myself and my kids,” she said.
How did Janet Shitandi become second wife?
Five years later, Janet met another man Matthew (not his real name), while out clubbing with her friends.
“When I lost my first husband, I was just 22, so I hadn’t really lived like a youth. A few of my agemates encouraged me not to stay indoors all the time. They took me out to clubs, showing me what I was missing,” she explained.
The mother of three noted that Matthew was kind and loving, and she couldn’t help but fall in love with him.
Despite being warned by one of her friends to stay away from Matthew, Janet turned a deaf ear and continued with the relationship.
“I was told he had a wife and was a womaniser, but I loved him and was ready to be with him because he assured me nothing would come between us,” she said.
Janet eventually became pregnant by him and agreed to become his second wife.
She shared that her mother had warned her against marrying a man who was already married, but she didn’t listen.
According to her, becoming a single mother of three was not a future she wanted, so she chose to stay with Matthew.
“He introduced me to his first wife as his new wife and welcomed me into his family,” she added.
At first, the marriage seemed to work. Matthew paid school fees for her two children from the previous marriage.
Janet recalled living with seven children from her co-wife and two others from her brother-in-law, all of whom she cared for.

How did Nairobi woman’s marriage fall apart?
Trouble began when Janet confronted the first wife’s eldest daughter for refusing to wash dishes.
“I shouted at her, and when her dad came home, she started crying and told him I had beaten her. My husband was furious and didn’t even listen to my side of the story. He physically assaulted me in front of the children and I was pregnant,” she said.

Frustrated and in pain, she ran to her best friend, who rushed her to hospital, where it was confirmed she had dislocated her hip.
Janet later discovered that her best friend was secretly in contact with the first wife, informing her of everything happening between Janet and Mathew.
“Problems continued even after I gave birth to my third-born. My husband withdrew all support. There were times I slept on an empty stomach,” she recalled.
How did Janet know best friend had an affair with hubby?
While Janet shared her problems with her friend, hoping for comfort, she was unaware that her confidante was sleeping with her husband behind her back.
One day, her friend’s husband called Janet to say he was leaving his wife because she was having an affair with Matthew.
Janet didn’t believe him at first, dismissing it as drunken talk, as she trusted her best friend.
“The man drank a lot, and many times he accused my best friend of sleeping with several people, so it was hard to take him seriously,” she said.
However, her suspicions were later confirmed when a church member revealed that the affair was real.
Despite the betrayal, Janet remained in the marriage for 15 years, filled with drama, abuse, and disrespect.
At one point, Matthew served her with divorce papers and threatened to take all the children away from her.
Should wife’s share details of marriage with close friends
TUKO.co.ke spoke to Jedida Wafula, a Nairobi-based psychologist who shared that boundaries are important in marriage and friendships.
She noted that having close friendships is important for social development, but one must also set limits on what they share with their friends about their marriage.
“A marriage is a union between two people, and problems are bound to arise. That is why we have marriage counsellors, pastors or even parents from both sides. Getting genuine friends is a gamble and knowing someone's true intentions is hard,” she shared.
