However, hidden truths sometimes emerge even after decades casting doubt over the entire union.
Such was the case for Janet Shitandi, a Nairobi mother of three who originally hails from Khwisero in Kakamega.
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Janet painfully recounted how she discovered that her husband of 15 years had been married to a mzungu (white) woman long before she came into his life.
How did Janet Shitandi meet hubby?
The middle-aged woman shared that she met Matthew (not his real name) in a Nairobi nightclub. Despite him being 15 years older, they fell in love.
Shortly after, she became pregnant, and they agreed she would become his second wife.
“He told me he had a wife who lived in the village. When he decided to marry me, he brought her to Nairobi where we lived and introduced us. All along, I believed she was his only wife,” she explained.
According to Janet, the relationship was peaceful for the first few years until conflict arose after she called out her co-wife’s eldest daughter for refusing to wash dishes.
The girl reported to her father that Janet had beaten her. Without hearing Janet’s side of the story, Matthew physically assaulted her.
From then on, Janet said he withdrew financial support, and there were times she went to bed hungry.

How did Nairobi woman find hubby’s marriage certificate?
As tensions in their marriage grew, Janet suspected her husband of being unfaithful.
She found flirtatious messages between him and a woman she knew from a Nairobi club, strongly suggesting they were having an affair.
“Amid all this, I also confirmed he was sleeping with my best friend. All of it broke me,” she revealed.
When she confronted him, Matthew threatened her with divorce and full custody of the children. The church intervened, and they remained together.
One day, while doing house chores, Janet stumbled upon a marriage certificate showing that Matthew had been legally married to a white woman.
She recalled that when she first met him, an old friend had warned her that he was a womaniser and had once married a mzungu but she turned a deaf ear.
“After finding the marriage certificate, everything became clear. I connected the dots and confronted him. I wasn’t the second wife after all I was the third, and I didn’t even know,” said Janet.
Matthew was neither shocked nor remorseful. Instead, he dismissed her discovery and told her to stop snooping into matters that weren’t her concern.
She turned once again to the church, where Matthew was an elder, hoping for help. But the response disappointed her.
“All they told us was to talk things out and resolve the issues, but nothing improved. Eventually, I got tired. He became physically abusive and constantly threatened me with divorce,” she said.
The mother of three eventually gathered the courage to leave the marriage, saying she chose peace over pain.
She remains hopeful that one day she will meet someone who will treat her with the love and respect she deserves.
“I’m not in any rush. But if I’m to marry again, it has to be someone who’s either a widower or has never been married before,” she shared.
