But for one man, Brian (not his real name), the vow seemed to have had an expiry shorter than expected.

Brian sparked outrage in his community, prompting speculation and judgment after he publicly announced his search for a new wife on social media, just days after his wife, Glory, passed away.

What did Brian post on Facebook?

In a Facebook post, Brian said he was a widower and was looking for a God-fearing woman to marry.

“Good morning, God-fearing faithful, I come from Nigeria and I am 41 years old. I am a widower, no kids yet, but hoping to have some someday. Let’s praise God together and feel free to message. I need a God-fearing woman,” he said in his post.

The 41-year-old man’s post was met with outrage, with many saying it was too soon, as the wife had not even been buried.

Glory’s boss, Roberta Edu, stated that hours after sharing news of her death, family and friends reached out claiming the woman had been abused in her marriage.

“They shared different stories of the alleged abuse this girl suffered at the hands of her husband. After hearing so much, I contacted her family members, and they all confirmed that she had endured abuse,” she shared.

Roberta noted that she engaged her company lawyers, who advised that the family should file a case with the police.

“Together with some of Glory’s friends, we supported her family in filing an official complaint. The suspect was arrested, and the police requested that we pay for an autopsy,” she said.

What did Glory’s autopsy reveal?

Sadly, the post-mortem examination revealed that the deceased did not die of natural causes.

She suffered a deep crack in her skull; blood had flowed from the crack to the throat, among other abnormalities.

“We began to press the police to act appropriately. Meanwhile, bribery attempts were happening left, right, and centre from the man’s family. But that wasn’t with my consent. We focused on getting the police to do the right thing. I even had to escalate the matter to Police Headquarters in Abuja due to a corrupt counterpart in Ikot Akpan Abia. Eventually, the file was sent to the DPP for prosecution,” Roberta explained.

What did Glory’s family say?

While investigations were ongoing, Glory’s boss said her family filed a petition to withdraw the charges, noting that Brian was not capable of harming their daughter.

Under pressure from the family, Roberta withdrew the case, and a few days later, Brian was released.

A week after being released from prison, the 41-year-old made the post looking for a wife, even as a burial date for his late wife had already been set for August 1.

Is it right to search for a wife immediately after a spouse dies?

TUKO.co.ke spoke to Isaac Osunga, a church elder, who noted that beginning a search for a spouse before one’s wife is buried can be a sign of either disrespect or unresolved grief.

"Grief can sometimes lead people to do things that seem unforgivable, and perhaps the man thinks replacing his wife as soon as possible will help him cope with the situation," he shared.

He noted that Brian’s decision to search for a new wife before his own was even buried is spiritually, emotionally, and socially concerning.

"Yes, marriage is ‘until death do us part’, but I would advise the man to take time to grieve, seek counselling if necessary, and turn to God for direction and healing."

He explained that relationships should be formed after prayer and discernment—not out of loneliness.

When is the best time to move after the death of a spouse?

Details shared by the National Centre for Childhood Grief indicate that there is no specific timeline for when a person should move on after the death of a spouse.

However, it is better to wait to move on when a grieving spouse is no longer defined by the grief of their significant other.

One should also pick a partner who is mature enough to understand the complexity of your grief, which may surface in the course of your new relationship with them.
