Her two-year-old daughter, caught in the crossfire, received slaps while struggling to reach her mother. In desperation, Eva asked her five-year-old son to fetch a knife.
The child was willing, but was stopped by their house help.
“They would have witnessed the death of their mother at such an early age,” she wrote in her account, adding that she stood no chance of overpowering the man.
Why Eva Kari couldn't return to parents
Days later, she realised the emotional damage their constant fights were causing the children was irreparable. That moment birthed the beginning of her silent, deliberate escape plan.
With her modest income of KSh 25,000 from a job in Parklands, Eva envisioned a new life: starting small, in a KSh 3,000 single room in Gachie.
Returning to her mother’s home was not an option due to distance, and as a born-again Christian and praise-and-worship team member, she braced herself for the judgment from the church and community.
