Mercy Adhiambo told TUKO.co.ke that she met Emmanuel (not his real name) while in college. She was a single mother of one at the time.
“I had a child with my late boyfriend, who sadly passed away before the baby was born. So it was just me and my son when I met this man,” she recalled.
At first, she was unsure of Emmanuel’s intentions as they met on a bus where he asked for her number. She was just 21 and he was significantly older.

As they got to know each other, he visited her home and formally asked for her hand in marriage.
“We talked a lot and I told him about my family and background. One day, he visited my father and expressed his interest in marrying me. My dad agreed. Emmanuel told me he already had three children,” she said.
Emmanuel later paid her dowry, and the couple moved in together; Adhiambo, her young son Eugene, and Emmanuel’s three children, all older than Eugene.
Raised in a humble and God-fearing family, Adhiambo said her father advised her to treat Emmanuel’s children as her own.
“He was a widower. The kids were still young and needed a mother figure. I became a mum of four at 23, and life was okay,” she said.

When did Mercy Adhiambo's marriage begin to fall apart?
A few years into the marriage, Adhiambo began discovering packets of condoms in her husband’s clothes and bags while cleaning.
When she confronted him, he reacted with hostility and emotional abuse, telling her she should be grateful he wasn’t being “irresponsible” in the streets.
Despite the heartbreak and even contracting infections from him, she continued to take care of the children and her home, hoping for change.
“He would hurt me, apologise, and I would forgive him and move on,” she said.

Was Nairobi man dating househelp?
As the children grew older, the family moved into a bigger house to give the boys and girls separate rooms. But this move brought more pain.
Her husband began a relationship with their next-door neighbour’s househelp, Sele.
“I was clueless. We had children, and I never thought he would stoop that low. One day, my daughter Diana asked me what her dad and Sele always talked about. I dismissed her,” she explained.

Weeks later, Emmanuel was transferred to Nyeri. Not long after, Sele resigned from her job, raising suspicions.
Suddenly, Emmanuel stopped sending money for rent, shopping, and school fees. If he did, it was through their grown daughter, who was preparing to join the university.
Adhiambo's suspicions were confirmed when a neighbour’s daughter told her that Sele had eloped to Nyeri with her husband.
Did Adhiambo's hubby send her spicy videos?
Determined, Adhiambo visited Emmanuel’s employer and requested details about his residence in Nyeri. She planned a surprise visit.
“I got there and didn’t even go inside. I saw him with Sele. I heard him promise to marry her and tell her I was just his maid, that he only needed someone to raise his children,” she said through tears.
Crushed, she returned home and continued caring for the children — even when Emmanuel failed to support them.
Their firstborn daughter, who is anaemic, later needed blood urgently. Emmanuel ignored their pleas and refused to help.
Furious, Adhiambo reported him to his employer.
“I told his boss he had abandoned us. They came to our house and saw how we lived. We’d already moved from the bigger house due to rent arrears. Emmanuel was summoned, but this only made him resent me more,” she added.
That night, Emmanuel sent her videos and photos of himself and Sele without their clothes and sharing a romantic moment.
“That broke me. But I decided I’d focus on raising the children. Even his own children from his previous marriage refused to leave me. There was a time I told them to go back to their father, but my daughters told me they would stay with me, even in suffering. They’re the reason I wake up and hustle every day," she noted.
