Life took a different turn for the middle-aged man when he was offered his late wife’s 19-year-old sister, who had just finished high school, to marry.
“According to Luo culture, the elders from my late wife’s home sat down and decided I should take the young lady back with me to Nairobi. She was supposed to care for her sister’s children and be my wife as well,” he explained.
Jaoko stated that he was grieving and in pain, but did not object to the elders’ decision.
However, upon arriving in the capital city, problems began as the young woman started staying out late and sometimes disappeared from their home for days.
“She loved the city life, often went to clubs and came home late. I never touched her; she was only to care for my children and do basic household duties. I think this is why she went out so often, plus she was young and had not experienced the fun side of life,” he said.
Eventually, the father of three became a single dad as the young lady abandoned him and returned to her village.
How did the Nairobi man marry a police officer?
The then truck driver said that a year later, he decided to find a wife himself as he felt ready to start over.
On this quest, Jaoko met a beautiful woman, Victoria (not her real name), who is a police officer.
He was honest with her and shared his story, including that he had three children. Luckily, Victoria had no problem as she had one child of her own.
The couple planned their future, and he was introduced to her family and eventually paid her bride price.
“Her family gave her to me wholeheartedly and advised her to be a wife and leave the crown at the door anytime she came home after work,” he stated.
According to Jaoko, life was okay, and they lived happily for two years, with Victoria performing her traditional wifely duties.

However, she started questioning him about the time he got home and always wanted to check his call logs and messages.
“I was a truck driver; sometimes traffic was heavy, and I got home late. She would question me like I was in a police cell. She also checked my phone daily, looking for clues if I was talking to other women,” he explained.

The constant doubts and demands annoyed Jaoko, and one day, he refused to give his phone to Victoria.
Angered by her husband’s move, the police officer manhandled Jaoko and put him in handcuffs, binding him on their bed.
“I could not do anything. She threatened me several times that my house could become a crime scene anytime or even a cell. It’s not that I lacked strength, but she had all the power being a police officer. I feared for my life,” he said.

Jaoko explained that Victoria became disrespectful, stayed out late, and when she got transferred, she stopped coming home to him and their children.
The middle-aged man noted that one day she took her child away and never returned despite his repeated calls.
“I did not want to leave her because people would think I was the problem. My first wife died, the second left, and now the third, I had to fight for my marriage,” he said.
Jaoko accepted his fate and continued his work as a truck driver.
Unfortunately, he was involved in an accident in Maai Mahiu and sustained serious injuries.
“I was helped out of the wreckage by residents and rushed to the hospital when the ambulance arrived. They admitted me to a hospital in Kijabe, and my beloved wife never visited,” he said tearfully.
The father of three said efforts to reach Victoria proved futile; she did not answer his calls or respond to his texts.
He noted he needed care as he could not shower or use the bathroom alone, but his wife failed him.
One year later, Jaoko said she never returned home.
“Her father told my dad to go get the cows we had given as bride price. He did not explain why or where his daughter was, but I told my dad to tell them to sell or give them away. I decided I am done with her,” he narrated.
Now, Jaoko is a taxi driver in Nairobi, a job he takes pride in to care for his children.
What causes problems in marriage between cops and civilians
TUKO.co.ke spoke to Nairobi-based psychologist Jedida Wafula, who stated that marriages are different and their success is determined by the couple.
She said careers should not really matter, but sometimes, when the woman feels more powerful, it may affect the man's ego.
"Some women may also take advantage to create fear, leaving their husbands helpless. This may start problems, but it can happen in any marriage, not just for men and women in uniform. Relationships are specific to the couple."
