Migori: Running Battles as Rowdy Youth Disrupt UDA Meeting

Migori - A group of youths armed with stones and other crude weapons stormed a UDA party meeting in Migori and disrupted it for nearly three hours.

Police officers who arrived to quell the storm were forced to lob tear gas canisters and fire bullets in the air to disperse the group.

Speaking to the press shortly after normalcy was restored, Suna West Sub-County Police Commander Moses Sirma said five suspects were arrested by his officers and would face the full force of the law.

"We have five suspects in our custody and they will be arraigned in court tomorrow to face the law, " said the police boss.

Kisii-Isebania highway was barricaded by the youths during the commotion that brought the town to a standstill.

Nyanza Regional Regional Police Commander Manase Musyoka said the security officers were well prepared and managed to disperse the two rival groups on time.

“It was out of fear of more chaos. We forestalled the situation and things are now okay,” he said.

The meeting later resumed and went on smoothly, with a contingent of police officers on standby to deal with detractors.

The UDA meeting was held at Assar Johanson Primary School and was organised to mobilise and train officials who will take part in grassroots elections.

Former Migori governor Zachary Okoth Obado who was leading the meeting, called for political tolerance in the region.

"We are steadfast in the forthcoming polls and recruitment drive not only in Migori but the entire region," Obado said.
