He suggested that the recent political truce between President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga vindicates Chebukati’s handling of the 2022 General Election.
Speaking while condoling with Chebukati's family at his Kiminini home on Friday, March 7, Wetang’ula reminisced about his relationship with the former IEBC chief.
The speaker suggested that the recent political developments in the country vindicate Chebukati’s role in the elections.
He explained that God had a purpose for everything, including Chebukati's leadership during the fiercely contested polls.
"Pray and believe that God keeps everyone for a purpose. As a gesture of goodwill, as I conclude, Chebukati presided over one of the most hotly contested elections in the country. But today, God’s plans are beyond human understanding. President William Ruto, Raila Odinga, and all of us have sat down, had discussions, and reached an agreement that Kenya is bigger than any individual," Wetang’ula stated.
Wetang’ula urged Kenyans to rally behind Ruto and the former prime minister, stressing that unity is the key to national progress.
"We must unite our people politically for economic prosperity, as well as for the peace, security, and stability of our nation. The unity of Ruto, Raila Odinga, and all of us makes Kenya a more peaceful and better place to live," he added.
Why Wetang’ula considers Chebukati a hero
The National Assembly Speaker further lauded Chebukati’s distinguished tenure, describing his achievements as unparalleled in Kenya’s electoral history.
"Many kind words have been said about him, and all of them are true. He was a man of honour, intelligence, skill, and someone who knew how to distinguish between lies and truth," Wetang’ula remarked.
He noted that Chebukati made history as the only individual to preside over three presidential elections, a feat unlikely to be replicated.

Wetang'ula added that even future IEBC chairs would struggle to match Chebukati’s record, noting that by the time of the 2032 elections, they would likely have left office.
"This man, Chebukati, goes down in history as the only individual who presided over three presidential elections in Kenya. No one else has ever done it, and perhaps no one else will. Even those who are being brought in now, if they oversee the 2027 election, it will be their only one. By the time we get to 2032, they will have left office. This man is a hero," he declared. Wetang’ula declared.
What rules will be observed at Chebukati's burial
Earlier, the Trans Nzoia county administration established specific protocols for the funeral of Chebukati at his residence.
County Commissioner Gideon Oyagi stated that the event would be a solemn funeral service, not a political gathering.
Consequently, attendees are prohibited from wearing attire associated with any political party.
Oyagi also highlighted that expressions of political allegiance, such as cheering or jeering, will not be tolerated during the ceremony.
