In a passionate video statement on Thursday, April 10, the outspoken legislator said he and his team would not participate in the upcoming UDA grassroots elections scheduled for Saturday, April 12, in Mombasa county, citing alleged manipulation and favoritism.

Ali pointed fingers at UDA secretary general Hassan Omar, accusing him of using his office to impose preferred candidates and undermine the will of party members at the grassroots.

"The party’s secretary general wants to hijack the democracy of the people of Mombasa by handpicking his own people for various positions. The secretary general is treating this election as a mere formality because he already has a list of his preferred individuals, which he intends to push through. He does not want to allow the proper democratic process. He is denying others the opportunity to participate freely. He wants to impose his people in every constituency, from the ward level all the way to the top.
"Those who toiled for the party and stood with it when it was still unknown have been cast aside simply because they stand by the principles of the party, not by loyalty to a particular individual. The secretary general wants cheerleaders, not critical thinkers. He does not want people to ask questions," Ali alleged.

He said those who worked hard to build the party from the ground up were being pushed out for remaining loyal to principles rather than individuals.

Will Ali quit UDA party?

The Nyali lawmaker didn’t hold back as he declared his camp’s withdrawal from the grassroots polls and warned that if the situation remained unchanged, he would have no qualms leaving the party altogether.

"We officially withdraw. We will not participate, and we will meet you at the time ordained by God. On that day, we will ask each other questions. We will hand over the party to you, but we will come back with the people. And when we face you, we will face you with the people, and we will ask you many questions.
"If you have decided to ruin this party, then we will not be among those destroying it, we will leave it to you to ruin properly. We will not participate," he declared.

The two-term MP recounted his political journey, reminding his followers that he had won as an independent candidate after leaving ODM, and would do so again if need be.

"We have many options on the table. Let no one think that leaving a party means you are finished. I was once in ODM, I left ODM, ran as an independent, and I won the election. People are not interested in political parties; people are interested in what you do for them," Ali added.

Ali urged his supporters across Mombasa to boycott the April 12 elections and instead stay home, accusing the process of being pre-arranged and undemocratic.

ODM announces changes before polls

Elsewhere, ODM experienced internal challenges related to its grassroots election processes.

In Nairobi county, party delegates expressed support for secretary-general Edwin Sifuna's decision to dismiss certain election coordinators ahead of the scheduled grassroots elections.

The move aims to prevent infiltration by individuals lacking a history with the party and to ensure that only loyal members are elected to leadership positions.
