After quietly leaving Kenya for the US in early 2023, the former Interior CS returned to the country.
His return has been met with excitement, and he was welcomed back by a host of prominent political figures, including Jubilee Party secretary general Jeremiah Kioni.
While his return sparked interest and speculation about his future in Kenyan politics, it was Kioni who hinted at Matiang’i’s intentions for the upcoming 2027 General Election.
The Jubilee Party has already declared Matiang’i as its presidential flagbearer, fueling discussions about his potential candidacy.
Is Matiang'i working with Gachagua
As the 2027 elections draw closer, Matiang’i is also becoming more involved in opposition politics.
On Tuesday, April 29, he was spotted in a meeting with key opposition figures, including former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and several former Cabinet Secretaries such as Justin Muturi, Mithika Linturi, and DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa.
The gathering also included Martha Karua and former UNCTAD secretary-general Mukhisa Kituyi.
The meeting marked Matiang’i’s clear alignment with the opposition as he joined forces with those determined to challenge President William Ruto's administration.
