"We were with him today in parliament the whole afternoon. He left barely 30 minutes before he met his death," Junet said.
He also urged police to conduct a thorough investigation into Were’s death and keep Kenyans informed about the circumstances surrounding it.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo backed Junet’s comments, noting that Were left parliament around 7 pm and the shooting occurred at about 7:30 pm.
"The shooting was carried out by a passenger on a motorcycle. We are still working to determine the exact identity of the assailant, and as I’ve mentioned, investigations are ongoing. The driver and bodyguard brought the late MP to Nairobi Hospital," Omollo said.
The PS added that the assailants on the motorcycle had been trailing the MP’s vehicle from Nairobi’s Central Business District before carrying out the gruesome act.

In a press statement, police said the incident took place at around 7:30 pm and was initially reported by the Nairobi regional police commander.
The MP was in a white Toyota Crown along Ngong Road when it stopped at a red traffic light near the City Mortuary roundabout. It was at this moment, police said, that unknown assailants struck.
Were was not alone in the vehicle. According to authorities, both the driver and a male passenger emerged from the incident unharmed and acted swiftly to transport the wounded lawmaker to Nairobi Hospital.
Despite their efforts, doctors at the facility declared him dead on arrival.
Preliminary investigations suggest the shooting was not random. Police said early evidence points to a deliberate and well-coordinated plan to assassinate the legislator.
Senior officers and crime scene investigators have since secured the area and launched a full-scale probe to determine the motive and identify those behind the attack.
