On Sunday, May 4, the former deputy president hosted several opposition leaders, including Martha Karua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa.

In a series of tweets, Gachagua said the opposition is determined to defeat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

"The struggle of today is not altogether for today – it is for a vast future also. Our resolve for a better Kenya remains unparalleled.
"We will make big sacrifices for this country beyond personal goals and ambitions for the sake of our children. We have spoken in one relentless voice and commitment. Our country must prosper with a great promise to clean our country from the dealers," Gachagua said.

Matiang'i made the surprise appearance after reports emerged on social media suggesting he would not attend the meeting.

The former CS's arrival was met with a lot of excitement as residents welcomed him with dances.

The former Interior CS arrived several hours after the meeting had already started.

A majority of the leaders used the occasion to castigate the Kenya Kwanza Alliance administration.

Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga accused Ruto of betraying the Mt Kenya region, vowing to ensure Ruto is a one-term president.

"Kasongo betrayed us. We will never forget your betrayal, and we will never forgive you. We are going to send you to Sugoi. It is over between you and us," Kahiga said.

Does Matiang'i want to be Kenya's president?

The event comes a few hours after Matiangi's tour of the Gusii region, where he ultimately confirmed the long-standing rumours about his presidential ambitions.

Addressing his supporters at Gusii Stadium, the former CS vowed to tackle the challenges facing Kenyans.

He acknowledged the widespread issues and assured the public that he would be deliberate in addressing them comprehensively when the time is right.

Matiang'i urged the public to remain united despite the challenges they face, hinting at a brighter future beyond 2027.

Sources close to the former CS reveal that he plans to travel across the country to build support for his presidential bid as the election approaches.

He has already received the endorsement of the Jubilee Party, led by former president Uhuru Kenyatta, which offered to give him the 2027 ticket.

The former Interior CS returned to Kenya on April 18 after two years of absence from the country.
