Edwin Sifuna Declares He Can't Take Ruto's Cabinet Nomination: "I Would Never"

  • Senator Edwin Sifuna remains steadfast in his conviction not to associate with President William Ruto's government
  • The Nairobi senator, who also serves as the ODM party secretary general, declared that he cannot accept any offer to join the government as a cabinet secretary or any other senior position

Sifuna, while appearing on a Citizen TV interview on Thursday, May 8, stated that his focus was serving the people of Nairobi, as their senator was not out to seek any other position.

Can Sifuna work with Ruto?

Even at the magnanimity of President William Ruto, Sifuna said he would not accept any officer to be part of the current regime.

He revealed that he would be seeking to defend his in the 2027 elections, setting the record clear for those concerned about his political ambitions.

"The truth is, I have no intention of serving in a government such as the one that is in existence. I would never take a Cabinet position. In fact, they know. I don't know how I can put it. I have no intention. I am very happy serving the people of Nairobi as the Senator of Nairobi. And even in 2027, I've said I will not seek any other office other than the office of Senator of Nairobi. I am happy where I am," he said.

Sifuna vowed never to back down on his resolution as time goes by.

The senator's stance was once held by his seniors in the ODM party, who were later seen joining the government.

Last July, ODM's former national chairman John Mbadi, deputy party leaders Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya, and executive director Opiyo Wandayi were called up to the Cabinet despite having been critics of the president.

The nominees gleefully took up their posts, shifting their allegiance to Ruto.

How Edwin Sifuna trolled Ruto's partnership with Raila

Elsewhere, Sifuna talked down the idea that the whole of Raila's team moved to government by virtue of the memorandum of understanding they signed two months ago.

The senator said that those from ODM who joined the National Executive did so in their individual capacities and not as representatives of the party.

He pointed out that the CSs had done nothing substantial ever since they were sworn into the National Executive, this despite their chestthumping in public of being in the government.

Sifuna said he only recognises the government as being run solely by Ruto.

He vowed to hold the government to account when the need arises, dismissing the belief that there is a power-sharing agreement between the ODM party and UDA that would warrant leniency when it comes to oversight.
