Boyd Were, son of the late Kasipul MP Charles Ong'ondo Were, has signalled his readiness to take over his father's political duties following a meeting with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino in Nairobi.

The meeting, which Boyd described as inspiring, highlighted Owino's boldness and commitment to his constituents, qualities Boyd aims to emulate in his political journey.
"Hon. Babu Owino’s boldness, clarity of vision, and unwavering commitment to his constituents are qualities I deeply admire and aspire to emulate. Grateful for the inspiration and the insights shared, the future belongs to youths, bold enough to lead, wise enough to listen, and driven enough to serve," he said.

The move follows the tragic death of Ong’ondo, who was fatally shot by unknown assailants on April 30, 2025, near City Mortuary roundabout along Ngong Road, Nairobi.
The unresolved murder sent shockwaves across Homa Bay county and the nation.
Amid mourning, ODM leaders, including Governor Gladys Wanga and MP Peter Kaluma, rallied behind the idea that Were’s successor should come from his family.
During the burial ceremony, Boyd, his son, rose to the occasion—not just to mourn, but to signal his readiness to step into his father’s shoes.
Boyd calmly addressed mourners, expressing gratitude to the people of Kasipul for standing by his father since 2013.
He pledged to honour his father's legacy by continuing to educate his sponsored students and support the widows' groups his father aided.
Boyd's potential entry into politics has been met with both support and scrutiny.
While some constituents view his succession as a continuation of his father's work, others question his experience and readiness for the role.
As the Kasipul constituency awaits the by-election, Boyd's next steps will be closely watched.

Meanwhile, following the burial of the late Kasipul MP, a video emerged showing him endorsing Newton Ogada as his preferred successor.

In the clip, Were expressed his trust in Ogada, citing his philanthropic work and compassionate character as reasons he should carry on the mantle.
Ogada confirmed the endorsement and said he is ready to serve.
He revealed that he has built close to 6,000 homes for widows, constructed a school for orphans, and a hospital for the local community. In addition, he continues to support several widows across the region.
Vowing to uphold Were’s legacy, Ogada pledged to complete the projects the late MP had started and to continue helping the vulnerable people who depended on him.
