  • Grassroots leaders from Nairobi’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chapter voiced support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027
  • The leaders publicly criticised former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of fuelling tribal divisions and invoking fear through reckless political rhetoric
  • Survivors of the 2007/08 post-election violence strongly condemned any leader suggesting a repeat of such chaos, warning against statements that could incite unrest ahead of the 2027 elections

The bold proclamation came during a political gathering held at Safari Bowling Grill, where grassroots UDA leaders from across Nairobi County threw their full support behind Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid.

The event, led by nominated MCA Cecilia Wairimu and party official Abdallah Karenju, also served as a platform to call out former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua for stoking tribal tensions.

“We are fully committed to campaigning for Ruto’s re-election in 2027 because of his impressive track record,” said Karenju. “In just three years, initiatives like the affordable housing programme and slum upgrading projects have marked significant progress. He has earned a second term, and no one should be allowed to derail that focus.”

Gachagua accused of inciting unrest

Wairimu echoed the sentiments, accusing Gachagua of engaging in divisive and outdated political tactics.

Other speakers went further, condemning Gachagua’s recent statement implying that Kenya could experience a repeat of the 2007/08 post-election violence if the 2027 elections were mishandled by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Nancy Njeri, a resident of Embakasi East and a survivor of the 2007/08 post-election violence, issued a stern warning to politicians to stop using fear as a campaign strategy.

"Those of us who witnessed the violence against women and children firsthand cannot bear the thought of it happening again," she said. "Only someone who saw that horror through a TV screen can speak about it so lightly. Leaders like that should be rejected."

What did Ruto say about Gachagua’s one-term talk?

In a previous story by TUKO.co.ke, Ruto dismissed claims made by Gachagua suggesting he would only serve one term.

While commissioning the Mukuru housing estate, Ruto said he is committed to delivering on his promises and made it clear he was in the race for a second term.

He criticised early campaign slogans like Gachagua's "Wantam," insisting it was too soon for political noise.

The president added that his administration was focused on service delivery rather than politicking. He encouraged leaders to prioritise issues affecting ordinary Kenyans, such as hunger and education, instead of getting caught up in premature electioneering.
