DCP Members Claim George Koimburi's Alleged Abduction Is Precursor for Gachagua's Arrest

  • The recent calls for Rigathi Gachagua's arrest by a section of MPs seem to have caused tension in the former deputy president's camp
  • A section of Gachagua's allies alleged an elaborate plan by the state to trouble him in a bid to clip off his influence
  • They pointed to the alleged abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi as the indicator of imminent woes awaiting Gachagua

They are worried that he might be arrested and prefer charges against him.

What are signs Gachagua might be arrested?

Led by Gatanga MP Edward Muriu, the allies of Gachagua claimed there was an elaborate plan to trouble the former deputy president and clip his presumably growing influence, especially in Mt Kenya.

Muriu said the alleged abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi was indicative of the political machinations against the dissenters of the state, saying the writings were already on the wall.

Besides Gachagua's personal troubles, the politicians also alleged a plan to sabotage the popularisation of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), which was unveiled on May 15.

At the unveiling of the outfit, the former deputy president declared that it would be purposed to dislodge the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party from Mt Kenya.

With the mission on, the allies of Gachagua claimed the state is keen on eradicating competition, and doing so by intimidating and arresting opponents.

"We are very much aware as a DCP party and more so the people of the mountain that all this is orchestrated to dim the light to reduce the strength and the resolve to have our own party as a mountain, and as you can see, the vigour to suppress, to arrest, to abduct leaders who do not agree necessarily with the Kenya Kwanza government is on higher gear, and this is purely meant to make sure that our resolve is gone, the DCP party has no elected leaders who are supporters of that party, and the ultimate goal, and we are very much aware, is to arrest Rigathi Gachagua," said Muriu.

MPs call for Rigathi Gachagua's arrest over remarks on 2027 vote outcome

This came days after MPs allied to President William Ruto spared time in the National Assembly to discuss Gachagua's conduct.

They argued that based on his utterances in public, the former deputy president had become a threat to national security.

Some of the MPs called for his arrest and subsequent prosecution.

But even as Gachagua's allies used Koimburi's alleged abduction as political capital, the police gave a different account that quashed it.

Did George Koimburi fake abduction?

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) director Mohamed Amin said Koimburi staged his disappearance for political clout.

According to them, investigations had sufficiently linked his allies to the saga.

Kanja said that Koimburi was taken to a hotel on the evening of May 25, where he spent the night before he was taken to a coffee plantation the following morning to create a scene of abduction.

The police established that Koimburi deliberately tore his clothes to fake evidence.

His allies' cars were impounded as the police intensified their investigations into the saga.

Meanwhile, the lawmaker was admitted to The Karen Hospital, where he was admitted and placed under treatment.

However, the police took issue with the refusal of the lawmaker's family to allow them access to him for interrogation.
