Rigathi Gachagua Says William Ruto Doesn't Sleep When He Hears His Voice: "Nitamsukuma"

  • Rigathi Gachagua is convinced that his tirades against President William Ruto are working and that the latter is slowly giving in
  • He said he had made it his mission to trouble the president politically and scuttle his strategy for re-election in 2027
  • Until last year, when he was impeached, Gachagua was Ruto's top ally and defender, who would go above and beyond to tell off anyone who dared question the president

Former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua's bravado against President William Ruto might not end soon, even as the head of state's allies launch counterattacks.

Ever since he was impeached last October, Gachagua has made it his mission to decampaign Ruto and unleash what he regards as secrets that would dent the president's political standing.

How did Gachagua decide to handle Ruto?

He declared that his occupation until 2027 will be to make the president serve only one term.

Often, at every opportunity he gets to speak, the former deputy president talks down to Ruto, arguing that he is not fit to lead the country.

Seeming to take stock of his tirades against Ruto, Gachagua observed that the president is already shaken.

Speaking on Thursday, May 29, at a political gathering at Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka's home in Kitui county, Gachagua took pride in the presumed pressure he has mounted on Ruto.

According to him, Ruto only awaits defeat, as he has exhausted all the possible game plans he could have used to win back the Kenyan voter.

"I ask Kenyans not to be impatient with us. We know who Ruto is. I have marked him very well. He is not sleeping at all. Whenever he hears about me, he loses sleep. We are pushing him out; he must go," Gachagua said amid cheers from the audience.

At the same time, Gachagua reiterated the opposition's resolve to unite against Ruto.

He was upbeat that their side would form the next government.

How will Gachagua team settle on presidential candidate?

On the question of who will be their formation's presidential flagbearer, Gachagua explained that, at the right time, the team would consult and settle on the viable candidate.

He warned that early announcements would expose them to their opponent, who might in turn strategise to counter their mission.

At the same time, Gachagua allayed the fears of disunity rocking their team, arguing that proper consultations would be carried out to have the best candidate amongst them face off with Ruto.

Besides Gachagua and Kalonzo, their team features a handful of other principals who have declared their presidential bids, among them PLP party leader Martha Karua, DAP Kenya's Eugene Wamwala, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.

He said that those who would not make it to the presidential ballot would be accommodated in government posts like the bicameral parliament speakership and Cabinet slots.

"Please allow us the space. Do not hurry us to announce the presidential candidate to be blocked on the road, but trust all of us. There will be no conflict; the government will be expansive and will accommodate everyone. One will be president, the other the deputy president, and another one Prime CS and speaker; there is enough space for all of us. The most important thing now is to unseat Ruto," Gachagua said.

Has Gachagua cornered Ruto?

As Gachagua marvels at supposedly frustrating Ruto, the president is on the other end, proving tough.

He dismisses the former deputy president's formation as a team of idlers who peddle empty rhetoric without a solid plan alternative to his.

Ruto, despite the unpopularity of his administration among a considerable number of Kenyans, is convinced he will be reelected.

In his public rallies, the president dismisses having Gachagua and his team as his competition, saying he is competing against his track record.

He says that he is currently focusing on his development agenda, shelving politics for 2027 when he will take on his adversaries on the campaign trail.

Those against Ruto fault his regime for, among other things, exploitative tax regimes, incompetent executive, high cost of living, corruption and atrocities committed on dissenters, allegedly by state law enforcers.
