The former DP urged them to organise themselves into legal groups to shield young people from Mt Kenya from what he termed as state persecution orchestrated by President William Ruto.

Is Ruto targeting Mt Kenya?

In an emotional address at the funeral of nominated Nyandarua MCA Beth Wahito in Kinangop, Gachagua accused Ruto of launching a coordinated attack on the Mt Kenya community.

"All our lawyers in our eleven counties and any other county where our communities are, very quickly, organise yourselves into groups because William Ruto has planned persecution against our boys and our children," he stated.

The former DP painted a grim picture of what he described as deliberate efforts by the Kenya Kwanza administration to sideline and economically weaken Mt Kenya.

He said that lawyers from the community must now prepare to offer free legal defence for young people arrested in what he described as politically engineered crackdowns.

"Lawyers from our community, just as those in Nyandarua have done, just as those in central Kirinyaga, every county, by the end of the week, form a group of lawyers to defend our youths when they are taken to court," Gachagua directed.

"Our businesspeople, I want to give direction, be ready. When we hear that our youths have been arrested and money is needed for bond, you contribute money quickly so our youths can go home. Everyone in this community must now play their part. We have to join hands to protect this community from William Ruto," he added.

According to Gachagua, the current political assault on the region started when he was still serving as deputy president.

He accused Ruto of systematically purging Mt Kenya professionals from government agencies, especially the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), police service, and parastatals.

"When I realised, as deputy president, that William Ruto had planned to finish us as a community, he sacked our sons and daughters in KRA. He sacked our people in the police, in the parastatals," he claimed.

The outspoken Mathira politician further alleged that Ruto was reviving old strategies used during the KANU regime, accusing him of attempting to divide Mt Kenya East and West for easier political control.
