"If we want to transform the country, and I believe we do, we cannot tolerate and entertain characters like Matiang’i who have not been punished even though there were several court orders that found not just that he subverted the Constitution but that he was unfit to hold public office. He has not honoured any of those court orders," Miguna said.

Can Matiang'i replace William Ruto?

The vocal lawyer cautioned Kenyans that Matiang'i is not an option for replacing President William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 General Election.

According to Miguna, Matiang'i exemplified the abuse of power in its purest form while serving as the Interior CS.

He narrated Matiang'i's alleged shortcomings, including the extrajudicial killings that happened under his watch as the Interior CS.

"Matiang’i exemplified the abuse of power in its purest form. When you hosted him, I barely heard him interrogated on what he did; the River Yala murders, the destruction of my house, my abduction and detention incommunicado and torture of many days in defiance of multiple court orders. His forceful exile of me when I was sedated and unconscious and dumped in Dubai, and then subsequently issuing illegal red alerts and stopping me from returning to Kenya for five long years," he claimed.

Can Fred Matiang'i win in 2027?

Meanwhile, on Monday, June 2, Kenyans got a glimpse of Matiang'i's preparedness after a campaign truck branded in Jubilee Party colours was spotted.

Matiang'i is among the key opposition leaders looking to defeat Ruto in the upcoming election, which analysts suggest will be highly contested.

The truck, which had Matiang'i's image, was parked outside the Jubilee Party headquarters, signalling his active preparations for the 2027 presidential race.

The vehicle, adorned with Jubilee's red and white colours, bore the slogan 'Mbele Pamoja', a phrase popular with the former ruling party.

Matiang'i recently resigned from his World Bank job to concentrate on popularising his presidential bid.

He is among the opposition team consisting of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, among others.

Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni insisted that Matiang'i is the best candidate to defeat Ruto.

Can Matiangi work with Ruto?

The former Interior CS has ruled out working with President Ruto, saying there is nothing the he can discuss with him at the moment.

Speaking during an interview with K24 on Monday, July 14, Matiang'i said the head of state should listen to the plight of Kenyans, particularly the Gen Zs, instead of trying to look for "allies and excuses".

He also dismissed calls by ODM leader Raila Odinga to have an intergenerational conclave to discuss issues affecting the country and forge the way forward.

According to the former CS, Kenyans have already expressed themselves clearly on what they expect from the government and should not be taken through unnecessary conversations by people "who have no intentions to listen or live up to their promises".

He accused Ruto of hoodwinking Kenyans into believing in him as a God-fearing leader with good plans and intentions, only to be disappointed by his leadership two years on.
