The former vice president and Wiper Patriotic Front leader confirmed on Wednesday, July 23, that he had travelled abroad discreetly to focus on what he termed “strategic planning” for Kenya’s future.

Though he did not disclose his location, Kalonzo explained that his goal is to develop a clear plan to address the country’s current challenges and offer voters an alternative to the Ruto-led administration.

He emphasised that his primary objective is to see President William Ruto voted out of office in the next poll.

"I'm currently out of the country for strategic planning for a better Kenya. I will make my plan for Kenya for Kenyans to review, not William Ruto," he wrote in a social media post.

Where is Rigathi Gachagua?

Kalonzo’s declaration comes as part of a broader wave of movement within the opposition, with key figures positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential race.

Just weeks earlier, former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua had also left the country for the United States, where he has since held multiple engagements with Kenyan diaspora communities.

Gachagua, who is now openly campaigning for the presidency, began his American tour with a town hall meeting in Boston on Sunday, July 21.

Addressing Kenyans abroad, Gachagua painted a grim picture of Kenya’s state, accusing the current regime of mismanaging the economy and leading the nation into what he described as a “nosedive.”

He said many citizens, both at home and abroad, were increasingly disillusioned with the government's handling of public affairs. According to him, the country is running on autopilot and is in urgent need of responsible leadership, transparency, and economic revival.

Gachagua has also engaged with American local leaders, including Dracut Town Manager Kate Hodge, in a bid to build strategic international relationships.

On the evening of Wednesday, July 23, he and his wife, Pastor Dorcas, were hosted by clergy members for dinner in Chelmsford, Massachusetts.

The religious leaders voiced concerns over the state of governance in Kenya, particularly regarding corruption, social security, and constitutional integrity. Gachagua reassured them of the opposition’s commitment to champion reforms and restore public confidence in leadership.

Speaking to Kenyan nationals in Baltimore City, Maryland, Matiang’i urged the diaspora to support his 2027 presidential campaign, promising a more accountable government.

He vowed to uphold the rule of law and ensure that all public servants are held answerable for their actions if he is elected.

Matiang’i acknowledged the vital role played by Kenyans in the diaspora, stating that their participation and oversight would be critical in rebuilding the country.

He pledged to work towards a government that prioritises education, healthcare, social protection, and youth empowerment, saying the country must tap into the potential of its citizens abroad.

The absence of Kalonzo, Gachagua, and Matiang’i from the country mark a significant moment in the opposition’s early campaign strategy.

Alongside leaders such as Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa, they are expected to form a unified front to challenge Ruto’s re-election bid.

TUKO.co.ke previously reported that Gachagua dismissed a document which suggested he would become the prime Cabinet secretary if the United Opposition won the 2027 General Election.

He claimed the report was false and described it as a move by state intelligence to cause confusion and division within the opposition. Gachagua maintained that the opposition had not yet agreed on a presidential candidate.

He revealed that the process of choosing the opposition’s flagbearer would involve a vetting and vote-counting exercise after December 2026.

Although he positioned himself as a leading contender with strong chances of defeating Ruto, Gachagua stated that he would step aside and support whoever emerges as the consensus candidate.
