Speaking at the Senate on Tuesday, July 29, Cherargei humourously said that he does not understand why people always want to grab public land, yet there is plenty of it in heaven.
"For us who are believers as Christians, when Jesus went to heaven, he told us there is land. Why would you grab on earth when there is already land in heaven?"Cherargei said.
Intending to have the issue addressed, Cherargei called on the National Land Commission to check on the matter and ensure that it comes to an end.
Seemingly implying that land is vanity, he argued that no matter the size of the land someone owns, they would still leave it here when they die.
He highlighted some people from the political class who own land that is almost the size of an entire province, yet they still want more land.
"So I want to discourage that, even if you die, Mr. Speaker, even if you have 10,000 acres of land like one of the prominent families in this country, so that when you drive, you see that almost the entire Western province belongs to one family. But when you die, you will be four by six under; you are not taking anything," Cherargei said.
The outspoken politician called on politicians and other Kenyans to stop grabbing land meant for public use.
How did Kenyans react to Cherargei's comments?
Cherargei's statement sparked a debate online with some refuting claims that there is plenty of land in heaven.
Sam Kim:
"No lands in heaven, just do politics."
Fidel Castro:
"Jesus talked about mansions."
Umar Hatuluba:
"Cherargei was among the 12 disciples."
Maina Kiruri:
"Tell them again, my brother."
Light Muigai Munga:
"Which land, quote the scripture."
