  • Gathoni Wamuchomba might not have foreseen a wild backlash as she upload a video of herself flagging off desks to needy schools in her constituency
  • Perhaps marvelling at what she knew was commendable initiative, she shared the feat online to showcase her work as an elected Githunguri MP

It was from that experience that she resolved to equip schools with such essential facilities as desks.

On Friday, August 1, she allocated 1000 desks to ten public schools in the constituency.

Perhaps pleased by her feat, the MP was filmed "flagging off" the desks to the select schools and shared it online.

It was a spectacle that turned out to be a poisoned chalice; she might never have anticipated.

Kenyans on the X social network poked holes in the display.

The naysayers argued that the MP had gone overboard to seek gratification with a basic gesture to a school.

They said that issuing desks to a school should not have been like rocket science to warrant such a display; after all, she is an elected representative of the people with a ready kitty to undertake development for her people.

"This is optics over outcomes, poverty management dressed up as philanthropy, and a loud confession that the system has failed so badly that even desks now require ribbon-cutting," said Willis Otieno.

"With all due respect to the Honourable MP, was the flagging-off of school desks truly necessary? When everything becomes a circus, the people deserve more than clowns," argued Oliver Koima.
"The tragedy of being poor is that you get to entertain a lot of crp. Why on earth should a whole MP flag desks??. Parliament is so unnecessary," said Waithira Thuo.
"The highest level of absurdity I find in this is that there are very respectable people (with brains) clapping to this clownish tendency. This is a new level of low established within our borders," Cenas Ojunga.

But the MP would not be one to be pinned down by detractors.

He owned up to her achievements, asking those against her initiatives to keep off her social media timelines.

She took pride in utilising the CDF monies properly.

"This is my version of empowerment and I’m proud of it courtesy of NGCDF. I have to make my voters know how I use their money. Anybody who ever sat on a stone in class like me or on a water container can relate the impact. Woman for the job," she said.
