Did US senator propose review of Kenya's non-NATO ally status?
The Idaho senator James Risch, who also serves as the chair of the Foreign Relations has proposed a bill that seeks to review Kenya's status as a Non-NATO major Ally that was conferred on June 24, last year.
Kenya was able to secure the status during Ruto's State Visit to the USA in May 2024, when Joe Biden was still president.
The designation made Kenya a key US partner in Africa and deepened the bilateral ties between the two states in defence, security and economic areas.
The move to begin investigations was triggered by the relationship between Kenya, key government officials with non-state armed groups, including Sudan's RSF.

He stated that he had warned the head of state against ties with the RSF and the barring of foreign terrorist organisations from accessing the country.
"Mr. William Ruto, we warned you on Sudan's Rapid Support Services – RSF and Al-Shabaab, we asked you to bar international crooks and foreign terrorist organisations and individuals from Kenya," Gachagua's statement read in part.
While directly hinting at the Gen Z killings during demos, Gachagua accused Ruto of failing to listen to Kenyans when they called out the police over the use of unnecessary force and violence against civilians.
"Mr. Ruto, Kenyans asked you to stop extrajudicial killings, unnecessary force and violence against civilians using state-sponsored militia, police brutality, forced abductions and disappearances, illegal detentions, and blatant abuse of human rights," Gachagua added.
Gachagua wound up his statement by calling on Kenyans to heighten their advocacy to the international community on the vices that are currently happening in the country.
